Vucetich Returns to Tigres UANL
The Tigres UANL bench has a new owner. The club announced that Víctor Manuel Vucetich will take over the interim coaching role starting from Matchday 5 of the Apertura 2026, after Guido Pizarro’s departure and Hernán Elizondo’s interim stint. Vucetich, nicknamed “Rey Midas,” returns to coach the university team for a second time, after his 1995-1996 and 1999-2000 spells.
Changes in the Technical Staff
For the new phase, Vucetich will assemble a technical staff with significant changes. Carlos Barra will replace Sergio Almaguer as assistant, while Milton Graniolatti will be the fitness coach. The club’s men, Hernán Elizondo and Joel Turrubiates, will remain in the working group, ensuring an immediate transition.
Sporting Context
The team was in the lower part of the general table (16th) after recording three losses and one draw in the first four Liga MX matches, with a modest participation in the Leagues Cup. Facing the urgent need for results, the board evaluated international options such as Óscar Pareja, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, and Quique Setién, but chose Vucetich for his deep knowledge of the Monterrey area.
Institutional Changes
The announcement also included dismissals and appointments within the institution. Gerardo Torrado will leave the Vice-President of Sports role, and the club confirmed that Vucetich will assume that position along with the interim coaching job.
Vucetich’s Career
With five Liga MX titles, three Mexico Cups, three Concacaf Champions League titles, and one InterLiga, Vucetich is one of Mexico’s most decorated coaches. His career includes promotions with León (1990), championships with León (1991-92) and Tecos (1993-94), cup titles with Cruz Azul and Tigres (1996), and the golden era with Monterrey (2009-2013) with two leagues, one InterLiga, and three Concacaf.

The club is preparing for Matchday 5 against Atlante, with the expectation that Vucetich’s arrival will stabilize the squad and bring Tigres back to prominence in Mexican football.
