Tigres UANL suffered a tough 2-0 defeat away to FC Juárez on Saturday, in matchday nine of the Liga MX Apertura 2026. Colombian striker Óscar Estupiñán was the executioner for the visitors, scoring both goals in the match-one from the penalty spot and one in open play-to leave Tigres languishing in 15th place with just 7 points from a possible 24.
Miguel Vucetich's side lined up in their familiar 4-2-3-1 formation, enjoying 58% possession and registering 13 shots, the same number as their opponents. Effectiveness, however, belonged to the hosts. In the 66th minute, a foul inside the box resulted in a penalty, which Estupiñán converted confidently. Thirteen minutes later, the same player sealed the victory following an assist from José Luis Rodríguez, capitalising on a defensive lapse.
Miguel Vucetich told reporters that his team deserved more for their possession and chances but acknowledged a lack of sharpness in key moments. The manager pointed out that defensive mistakes in two isolated plays cost them dearly on the scoreboard.
The defeat leaves Tigres UANL in a difficult 15th position, with a record of one win, four draws, and three losses from their first eight outings. Forward Rafael Aguirre, the team's top scorer with three goals in seven appearances, could not find the net on this occasion. The outlook in the standings is concerning, as the team is now on a five-match winless run in the league.
Their next fixture is at home against Puebla on September 27, an opponent currently sitting fifth. Tigres will need to react quickly to get their Apertura campaign back on track.
Manager Miguel Vucetich expressed his frustration after the 2-0 defeat to an FC Juárez side that had arrived with eight consecutive losses. "Uncomfortable and annoyed by what happened on the pitch," stated Vucetich, questioning the penalty awarded and the missed chances. The coach also confirmed that Rómulo Zwarg's injury during warm-up forced the lineup change with the introduction of César Araújo. Also, he backed Guillermo 'Memo' Martínez after failing to secure reinforcements in the transfer market, stating he "is a great player, a World Cup player". The defeat leaves Tigres in 16th place in Liga MX.
